In this brief media study the author explores supervision and control practices implemented through digital media by referring to anthropology of media and theory of biopolitics. The text focuses on algorithmized, software-based biometrics and the resulting databases, and it looks into scenarios of political and consumer control and supervision. The theoretical context for these reflections is discussed with respect to the post-media situation which results in biomedia practices, digital media placed close to human body and its organic sensorium (particularly, the face) as well as reconstructions of cultural codes that are attributed to human body and its vital functions. In his analysis the author refers to mobile applications and their software systems, while pointing to social practices that begin to develop around them.

Key words: biomedia, database, software, face, biometrics

Each epoch has its own technology that defines it. Nowadays these are microprocessor-based digital devices. Technological advancement enforces changes in communication methods, which in turn triggers a number of new phenomena. Another important feature that additionally distinguishes the present times are solutions based on algorithms and artificial intelligence effectively used by websites (search engines, social media), increasingly growing into the position of ‘non-human’ partners in interaction and as sources of knowledge about the world. The author
focuses on problems and social consequences of digital communication, aiming to strengthen critical attitudes towards digital technologies – often perceived as ‘transparent’ and therefore used uncritically. Particular attention is paid to phenomena which according to the author constitute an example of information paradox which arises as a result of simplified and automated digital communication tools. In this context the text discusses: information overload, solutions based on the system of black box, changes in bonding processes and in social experiencing of certain rituals.

Key words: communication, algorithm, automation, bias, information, social media, Facebook, Google

Algorithms and their performance are a derivative of the efficiency of their design, quality of the data they use as well as the data that they tend to omit – intentionally or due to lack of access to it. Equally important are assumptions made by algorithms to fill the gaps in the data on which they work. As technological and social constructs they are reality-describing models which either remain visible in the process of data analysis or are pushed beyond the limits of our perception. The author discusses ways in which data can be made both visible and transparent, while diagnosing the sources of data omissions and their consequences.

Key words: algorithm, data, data visibility/transparency, proxies

The article presents reflections regarding creative machines which use algorithmic principles to create, such as biological algorithms, generative designs, neural networks, learning systems and deep learning as well as robotic tools. One of the most distinctive examples of an artist that constructs autonomous machines capable of creating artistic artifacts is Patrick Tresset and his Paul. The discussion focuses on the recurring question: Is the position of the artist in the times of AI still reserved strictly for humans, or can artistic and aesthetic values be also attributed to works of creative machines?

The authors of the text argue that any relationship established between the code and analogue elements of the operating system should be recognized as a matter of aesthetic choice. According to them with free code writing, enabled by rising computational power, certain elements (procedures) of the work may become part of artistic expression as a result of the designer’s arbitrary decision. In contrast, in older installations codes had to be well-matched to ensure compatibility with the analogue components of the system because of constraints in computer performance. It was a relationship in which only these procedures could be applied which conformed to the architecture of the operating system. Consequently, the expression of such work was essentially a reflection of its structure.

Algorithms – information – pictures

doi.org/10.26112/kw.2019.104.07

Political actors are increasingly using online algorithmic technologies to manipulate the public opinion more than ever before. With this in mind it is necessary to recognize the powerful possibilities that come with microtargeting, personalization of political messages and management of semi-automated social actors (bots). The basic research question asked in the article focuses on political rivalry. The author ponders on the extent to which political persuasive and manipulative actions, supported by algorithmic software of social media, fit within the existing perception of different forms of propaganda.

Key words: propaganda, political manipulation, mass self-communication, Internet, algorithms

The article discusses phenomena related to the role that the Big Data technology plays in how culture is nowadays created and consumed. The subject of the analysis is Netflix, one of the video on demand service providers, and Rotten Tomatoes, a film review-aggregation website. Both services are recognized as examples of algorithmic culture. The author focuses primarily on whether – and if so then in what way – the thus understood algorithmic culture: 1) is functional with respect to consumption patterns represented by the so-called cultural omnivores in the context of modern attention economics; 2) contributes to changing evaluation standards for assessing cultural content quality and the status of professional criticism.

Key words: algorithmic culture, Netflix, Rotten Tomatoes, cultural omnivores, attention economics, quantification

Community is a conceptual category that originated from social sciences. However, from the cognitive and analytical point of view no universal definition of the term is available. Problems arise with respect to the definition framework of the category and ambiguity of theoretical concepts regarding the function and substantial state of community. Ideologically, it is frequently perceived as a desirable state, which makes an axiologically neutral analysis rather difficult. Studies of the National Centre for Culture Poland show that sense of community is one of the reasons why Poles celebrate their Independence Day. The article discusses the idea of community attitudes based on David B. Clark’s analysis and the results of the 2016 and 2017 surveys of Poles’ attitudes to and opinions on this holiday.

Key words: community, individualism, participation, Independence Day, pride, solidarity, axiology, sense of importance
